Why is the title so important?

Your car title is ther legal proof of ownership, without it a legal transfer of ownership can not happen (in most states). The title documents the vehicle’s history ( ex. previous owners) and identifies when you became the vehicle’s owner. If you can’t produce the title, then there’s no proof that you have the right to sell it.  The last person registered on the original title may still have legal claim to the car, even if you have proof you paid for for the car.

However, there are exceptions to every rule and this one is no different. It is possible that your car may fall into the category of being able to legally sold without a title.  For instance, a common issue is the bank may still own the vehicle (as you've taken a loan out for it) or you may have a repair lien on it.
